Dog rehoming FAQs

Q. How do I apply to rehome a dog?

A. Please see our full rehoming process and procedure here.

Q. I’m looking for a specific breed/ type/ size of dog, and I don’t see a suitable one on your website at the moment. Can I go onto a waiting list?

A. If you are looking for a specific type or breed of dog and don’t see a suitable dog on our website, you can always register by filling out a general application form. To do this, go to the “Meet the dogs” page on our website, and click on any dog. Once on the dog’s individual page, click the green “Apply to rehome me” button and fill out the form, but state on your form that it’s a general application and say what you are looking for. Then should a suitable dog become available, our team will contact you. We keep general applications on file for 3 months, after which time you would need to re-apply if you have not heard from us.

Q. How much does it cost to adopt a dog from Animals in Distress?

A. Our dog adoption fees can all be found here.

Q. I have children. Can I still adopt a dog?

A. Every dog reacts differently to children so it’s vital that we assess each match on an individual basis. This is to ensure the best, and safest, possible relationship between the dog and the children. Where possible, we will say if a dog can potentially be rehomed with children, however this may depend on the child’s age and whether they have lived with dogs before as well as the individual dog’s character.

Once you’ve enquired about a specific dog, we can talk through all of their needs and how children fit into this.

Q. Why can’t we walk around the kennels any more like we used to, so we can see all the dogs before we apply?

A. In 2016, we closed our kennels for general public viewing, for welfare reasons. You can read more about the reasons for this here.  However, the kennels being closed to the general public makes no difference to our rehoming procedure, and once you have registered with us as looking to adopt a dog, you can come and meet any dogs who may be a suitable match for your circumstances. There is no limit on the number of dogs you can meet before making your final decision.

Q. I’m looking for a puppy. Do you ever have puppies for adoption?

A. We do occasionally get puppies needing new homes. You can register your interest in adopting a puppy in advance – to do this, go to the “Meet the dogs” page on our website, and click on any dog. Once on the dog’s individual page, click the green “Apply to rehome me” button and fill out the form, but state on your form that it’s a general application and say what you are looking for. Then should a suitable puppy become available, our team will contact you. We keep general applications on file for 3 months, after which time you would need to re-apply if you have not heard from us.
